Nursing Procedures

This is a section on the various procedures registered nurses are qualified to perform (differs from countries to countries).

Note: For all procedures, please note that the nurse would have to do the following BEFORE preparing her requisites for the procedures:

1. Get the order (usually in an IMR, for medications, wound chart for a wound dressing etc)

2. Introduce herself and identify the correct patient using the two patient identifiers ie. patient's name and IC by asking patient and confirming it with his patient wrist tag.

3. Mentally prepare the patient by explaining the procedure, its purpose and importance to the patient and asking the patient to empty his bladder (in case the procedure is very long) etc.

4. Check the "procedure site". For example, if administering intravenous (IV) medications, check that patient has a patent IV plug and if patient has a plug, check for POET--pain, oedema, erythema and temperature (signs of infection). If inserting nasogastirc tube (NGT), check that patient has no blocked nose before preparing the items.

5. Tell the patient to wait while she prepares her stuff.

Thus, the steps in the individual procedures would start after the above had been performed.

Disclaimer: The steps provided in this website are not the perfect ways to perform the procedures. When in doubt, please consult a qualified professional who may be in a better position to advise you on the correct/ better way of doing a particular procedure.
